Resume Tips for New Graduates

In a recent episode of CAEL Live, we spoke with Nilou Vakili, a career adviser at Alexander College. She shared the following resume tips for new graduates:

  • Customize your resume each time

By ensuring that your resume is tailored to each position you apply for, you are effectively communicating your suitability for the position that you are applying for, there is no question that you are a serious contender.

  • Highlight your achievements

Employers are looking for achievements just as much as qualifications, so highlight the outcomes you’ve had, rather than just what you’ve studied.

  • Note your accomplishments

Accomplishments, including your studies, are still important, and demonstrate to your future employers that you are able to learn and apply your skills in a meaningful way.

  • Proofread and proofread again

Don’t let spelling or grammar mistakes set you back! Proofread your resume a few times, and get some fresh eyes to take a look in case you’ve missed something.

  • Give a head’s up to your references

Letting your references know that you are applying for jobs and that they are listed will let them prepare a few talking points about you, and will help them feel prepared when your potential employers start checking up on you.

  • Keep it updated

Make sure to keep your resume up-to-date! If you completed a large project, or finished a new training program, be sure to include it while it is still fresh in your mind and you can easily summarize it on your resume.

In addition, our guest had valuable insights on what not to do on your resume, and discussed potential reasons for why you didn’t get a call-back from your application or interview. Check out our video for all of these great tips!

Conclusions

  • Applying for jobs can be a daunting task, but by taking the time to tailor your resume and cover letter for each position, you will make yourself stand out with potential employers, and will be more likely to be asked to interview for the position.
  • Being well-prepared is the key to resume success! Make sure it is up-to-date, free of any spelling or grammatical errors, and give your references notice that you are seeking a new position. Your preparation will pay off!

I appreciated the availability of test dates for CAEL, and found it convenient and inexpensive compared to other English proficiency tests.

CAEL
What I liked most about the CAEL was that you can do the test on the computer, it uses Canadian English, and the results are released quickly!
